Last week, on Wednesday 8 July 2026, our team joined fellow Pump Centre members at the Holiday Inn in Runcorn for an exclusive one-day mini-conference hosted by United Utilities. The theme — “Simpler. Smarter. Better.” — perfectly captured the direction the water and wastewater sector is heading. It was a focused, interactive day of knowledge sharing, networking, and practical insights that we’re already putting to work.

What “Simpler. Smarter. Better.” Really Means in Practice

Across the sessions and exhibition conversations, three clear threads emerged:

Simpler The industry is actively working to reduce complexity in operations, maintenance, and project delivery. Standardisation, modular approaches, and more intuitive control systems featured heavily. The goal is fewer errors, faster response times, and lower whole-life costs.

Smarter Data is finally being turned into actionable intelligence. Improved visibility across assets — through better sensors, remote monitoring, and digital tools — was a recurring topic. Predictive maintenance, real-time performance data, and smarter integration between systems are moving from “nice to have” to essential.

Better Ultimately, everything points to improved outcomes: greater reliability, lower energy consumption, reduced carbon impact, and more resilient networks. United Utilities’ perspective on their priorities for the region added valuable context on how these improvements translate into real operational and environmental benefits.

A huge thank you to United Utilities and The Pump Centre for organising such a well-run, relevant event. The combination of technical content, peer discussion, and exhibition opportunities made it one of the most productive days we’ve attended this year.

We’re already looking forward to the next Pump Centre mini-conference (the Scottish Water event is coming up in September). These member-only gatherings continue to deliver real value — far beyond what you typically get from larger, more generic industry events.
